SECOND GRADE LANGUAGE ART GOALS
SECOND GRADERS WILL BE READING THE FIRST SEMESTER BASAL READER AND USING THE ACCOMPANYING WORKBOOK. FOR PHONICS INSTRUCTION, WE USE A PHONICS PROGRAM AND WILL WORK WITH BLENDS,DIGRAPHS, GLUED SOUNDS, SUFFIXES, VOWELS, VOWEL TEAMS, AND SYLLABLE TYPES, CHAPTER BOOKS AND OTHER SELECTIONS WILL ALSO BE USED TO ENRICH THE LITERATURE EXPERIENCE. EACH CHILD HAS A INDEPENDENT READING LEVEL TO USE AS A GUIDE IN SELECTING BOOKS.
-WE USE CENTER LEARNING FOR READING INSTRUCTION. THE GROUPS ARE FLEXIBLE AND WILL BE EVALUATED AND REMODELED AS NEEDED.

WE WILL HAVE HOMEWORK MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY. HOMEWORK CONSISTS OF READING NIGHTLY FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES AND COMPLETING WORKSHEETS OR PROJECTS. PHONICS ASSIGNMENTS NEED PARENTAL ASSISTANCE. WHEN YOUR CHILD OR YOU READ ALOUD AT HOME, PARENTS COULD HELP WITH COMPREHENSION BY ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SELECTION.
-TO MAINTAIN A READING LOG, PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD WRITE THE TITLE OF THE BOOK, A SENTENCE OR TWO SUMMARY OF WHAT THEY READ, AND SIGN YOUR CHILD'S JOURNAL NIGHTLY AS PART OF THE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT.
